SAN DIEGO — An 80-year-old man who claimed he loved “Star Trek” said he was arrested for domestic violence and assaulting his ex-wife.
Rodney Smith was booked into San Diego County Jail on Monday after allegedly hitting his wife with a hammer, hitting her with a metal pipe and throwing a rock at her home in the city of Santa Cruz, police said.
Smith was taken to a local hospital where he was treated for injuries to his arm and leg, police told The Associated Press.
He was arrested after a domestic violence report was filed by his wife, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported.
Smith allegedly beat his ex during an argument over her inability to get him work.
Smith is charged with felony battery, misdemeanor battery, felony battery with a deadly weapon and misdemeanor battery with intent to kill, according to court records.
He is being held in jail on a $5,000 bond.
Smith has a lengthy criminal record.
He spent time in jail for aggravated assault, domestic battery, resisting arrest and aggravated burglary in 1997, according the San Francisco Chronicle.
