The NFL Players Association, environmental advocacy groups and a group of U.S. Senators say they’re asking the league to implement a ban on outdoor activities like concerts and games on a case-by-case basis.
In a letter to the league’s CEO, the union, the AFL-CIO, the National Football League Players Association and the United Food and Commercial Workers union are asking for a moratorium on indoor outdoor sports and events for up to 90 days and an enforcement plan to prohibit the use of stadiums and arenas as staging areas for events, including concerts and conventions.
“We urge you to take immediate action to address the growing epidemic of COVID, and also to implement measures to address other risks of outdoor activities,” the union wrote in the letter, which was obtained by the Associated Press.
“Actions that would not only be detrimental to the health and safety of our players, but the health of millions of others around the world, should be banned.”
While we applaud your recent announcements regarding health and wellness initiatives, we are particularly concerned by the timing of your actions and the manner in which they are being announced,” the letter said.”
These measures are particularly troubling as they could potentially allow athletes to play during a time of peak COVID transmission in order to maximize the chances of them surviving the pandemic and potentially prevent other health risks associated with playing in stadiums and arena settings,” the AFL said.
The NFLPA’s letter said it wants the league “to implement a comprehensive, comprehensive and immediate plan to limit outdoor activities, including games, for the duration of the pandemics, and provide clear guidance on how to implement such a plan, including how it will be administered and enforced.”
The letter also said the NFL should ensure that all outdoor activities at all levels, from concerts and sporting events to other types of sporting events, are banned until further notice.
The AFL-AFC has not made a specific request for a ban.
The union, which represents more than 300 NFL players, has been critical of the NFL’s handling of the situation.
The players union also has argued that the league needs to do more to ensure that players can participate in outdoor sports.
The letter from the union said the league is “a league of more than 200 million fans that is committed to providing safe and inclusive environments for our players.”
The AFL has said that more than 90 percent of its members are NFL players.
